Roh’s ‘negative’ view hurts leadership, GNP head says

Choe Byung-yul, chairman of the Grand National Party, said, “There is a serious problem in President Roh Moo-hyun’s historical view of the country. This is the fundamental cause of his failures in administering state affairs.” Mr. Choe made the remarks in a keynote speech to members of the foreign press corps yesterday.
“Mr. Roh defined modern Korean history as being characterized by ‘frustrations and distortions’ as well as ‘failed justice and a prevailing atmosphere of opportunism,’” Mr. Choe said, adding that “President Roh’s negative view of modern Korean history has rattled the nation’s basic values of liberal democracy and market economy. In addition, his dangerous black-and-white view of modern Korean history has disrupted our national community,” Mr. Choe added.
Responding to questions about the U.S. request that South Korea dispatch more troops to Iraq, Mr. Choe demanded that the Roh administration make public all information it has on the details of the request ― such as the size, role and cost of the troops ― to prevent the kinds of disruptions that occurred when the first group of troops was sent to Iraq.
When asked about his party’s stance, Mr. Choe said Mr. Roh was dealing with the matter in the wrong way. “He should not rely on the opinion of the country’s majority,” which does not know the details of the request. “If he does not know all these details, he should first consult with the United States to find out what they are, and then, if conditions are acceptable, he should make a decision on whether to dispatch the troops and persuade the people to go along with it.”
He added, “I think there will not be a big problem in getting my party to support my view that the troops should be dispatched. In addition, a United Nations resolution to send a multinational force to Iraq under UN auspices would play a critical factor in this issue.”
