Qualcomm says cell tap is possible
Disputing Korean government claims, Irwin Jacobs, the chief executive officer of Qualcomm, said that mobile phones built on the code division multiple access technology are vulnerable to wiretapping. Yonhap News agency reported Mr. Jacobs’ remarks yesterday. Qualcomm is a U.S. company that developed the technology for the code division multiple access standard for mobile phones used in the United States and Korea. According to Yonhap, Mr. Jacobs said in San Diego, that no telecommunications technique is completely free from the danger of being intercepted. He added, however, that the U.S. government demanded a high level of protection for the system, and asserted that Qualcomm has beaten that standard. Government officials here have claimed that CDMA cell phones are immune to wiretapping. In September, a dispute erupted over claims that phones could be tapped by cloning a cell phone handset, duplicating the serial number that is the basis for the encoding of the voice information. The Ministry of Communication said that while that might be theoretically possible, it was almost impossible in practice. On a more mundane matter, Mr. Jacobs said Qualcomm had no plans to reduce the royalty charged to cell phone makers, about 5.5 percent of revenue.
