LG sees strong sales of phones

LG Electronics Co. was the biggest seller of CDMA standard mobile handsets around the world from July through September. CDMA, or code division multiple access, is the dominant standard in Korea and the United States. According to Strategy Analytics, a U.S.-based market researcher, LG Electronics sold 6 million units, capturing the 23 percent of world market. The next biggest sellers of CDMA mobile phones were Samsung Electronics and Motorola. LG’s third-quarter sales of CDMA phones jumped 62 percent from the same period a year earlier. An LG official said sales of pricey phones with built-in cameras grew sharply in the United States and India. For cell phone sales of all standards, LG Electronics came in fifth behind Nokia Oyj, Samsung, Motorola and Siemens AG. LG Electronics ranked seventh in GSM phone sales in the world. GSM, global system for mobile communication, is the standard used in Europe. by Kweon Hyuk-joo
