Computer worm hits systems across Korea

A virulent computer program that attacks security holes in the Microsoft Windows operating system is spreading across Korea. Called the Sasser worm, the program disrupts computers connected to the Internet, unlike other computer viruses that spread through email accounts. If a computer is infected by the Sasser worm, error messages can appear and the computer may reboot automatically. According to Korea’s Ahn Lab Inc., about 260 cases were reported yesterday by 4 p.m. Hauri, another anti-virus company, said 150 cases were reported in just a few hours. Asan Medical Center in Seoul said that computers in the hospital were infected by the worm, and it could not use computers in the morning. Lotte Group also said its computers were attacked in the afternoon and computers were shut down.
