Mobile service firms’ ‘penalty’ dates detailed

The Ministry of Information and Communication announced yesterday the specific dates on which it will ban mobile service providers from enlisting new subscribers. Beginning on Monday, LG Telecom will not be able to sign up new subscribers for 30 days. KTF will be banned for 30 days starting on July 21 and SK Telecom will be banned for 40 days, between Aug. 20 and Sept. 28. Also, KT will be unable to sell wireless products for 20 days beginning on July 21. During these periods, the companies will be forbidden from enlisting new service subscribers as well as enlisting subscribers who want to change their service provider. Earlier this month, the Korea Communications Commission, a panel under the Ministry of Information and Communication, decided to suspend the activities of SK Telecom, KTF, LG Telecom and KT Corp. This decision was made in relation to the telecom companies’ illegal operations that involved providing private funds and subsidies on mobile handsets.
