Ministry to use Hyundai hybrid cars

Hyundai Motor said yesterday that it plans to supply the Ministry of Environment in October with 50 fuel-saving compact hybrid cars. The cars, which have both electric motors and gasoline engines, will be used for environmental study activities. Hyundai has been making experimental hybrid cars since 1995. It also plans to develop a hybrid car that will be commercially available in 2006. The company plans to invest 1 trillion won ($860 million) in the project and expand research and development manpower from the current 6,200 to 10,000. “The hybrid car will have a similar performance to the current compact vehicle but will use 50 percent less fuel,” said a Hyundai Motor official.
