‘Phishing’ alert in Korea

The Ministry of Information and Communication said yesterday that it would frequently monitor for “phishing,” a new form of Internet fraud. Phishing, a variation on the word “fishing,” is an e-mail scam that tricks people into entering their private financial data, such as credit card account numbers, in fake Web sites that look like they belong to legitimate financial institutes. The government added that it has opened up a center where victims can report such fraud on the Web site of the Korea Information Security Agency, which is under the ministry. The ministry said that so far there have been no reports of Koreans falling for phishing scams, but it needed to be vigilant regardless.
