Kim Dae-jung 2nd son beats bribery charge

The second son of former President Kim Dae-jung was found not guilty in Seoul High Court yesterday on charges that he took bribes from a local coal importer in exchange for help with a government contract.
The court reversed a lower court conviction of Kim Hong-eop and set aside his 10-month jail sentence. Mr. Kim, who is 54, was indicted in June last year for allegedly receiving 300 million won ($281,000) for aiding the coal company in its bid to supply a government-run company in 1998.
“Mr. Kim did receive 300 million won from the coal company, thinking it was from supporters of a peace foundation that he operated. But he returned the money when he saw the amount was too much to be considered a donation,” the ruling read. It also said, “There was not enough evidence that Mr. Kim did a favor for the supplier.”
