Samsung willing to join Sony in new LCD plant
Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s largest maker of flat panels, said it is willing to team up with Sony Corp. on a second plant to make liquid crystal displays. Samsung, which plans to start operating its newest LCD plant in March, is willing to team with Sony again, should the Japanese company want to do so, spokeswoman Cho Sung-in said, confirming earlier comments by Chief Executive Yun Jong-yong reported by Yonhap News. The companies haven’t begun formal discussions yet, she said. In March, Samsung Electronics and Sony announced plans to jointly spend 2.1 trillion won ($2 billion) to form a plant known as S-LCD Corp. Samsung Electronics and rivals such as LG Philips LCD Co. are investing in bigger plants to cut costs and lower prices of LCD televisions, which can sell for as much as $5,500, to spur demand. The market is forecast to grow 21 percent to $43 billion in 2005, according to market researcher DisplaySearch.
