Sending a gift in time

Here’s this week’s tip on Korean language and customs:

Q:
I want to send some clothes and books to family members in the United States and Switzerland. I tried FedEx and DHL before, but they were too expensive and inconvenient. What are some reasonably fast and reliable services available in Korean post offices?

A:
There are a few options available for international shipment at Korean post offices (www.koreapost.go.kr, English available). The most useful service is one that provides a tracking number, since most “lost” items can then be located. If possible, avoid regular international mailing services, which cost 3,800 won ($3.60) to 9,000 won for a package weighing between 500 grams and 1 kilogram, because delivery time is longer and there is no tracking number.

For the same weight, registered airmail costs 18,000 won. It takes about five to 10 business days, and comes with a tracking number which can be checked at the post office. For 27,000 won, the express service called EMS, which takes three to five days, comes with a 24-hour online tracking number and confirms delivery. For urgent packages, try TNT service. It costs 42,000 won and comes with an online tracking number and guaranteed delivery within two or three days.
