Trade panel rules against Japan’s robots
The Korea Trade Commission said yesterday that certain industrial robots from Japan are being dumped in Korea. The preliminary ruling followed a request filed by Hyundai Heavy Industries last year to look into the dumping of Japanese industrial robots in Korea. The robots have six joints on six axes and are used in automobile manufacturing. The commission said it will conduct field investigations and hold hearings for the next three months before making a final decision. It will also suggest that the Finance Ministry impose tariffs ranging from 8 to 15 percent, depending on the maker. As of 2003, the market for these particular robots in Korea amounted to 56.7 billion won ($56.5 million), of which Japan holds about 51 percent.
