Internet users to get new IDs for Web use

To protect Internet users’ privacy, the government said yesterday that it plans to implement special codes or other means of identification so that people don’t have to use their actual resident registration number when signing up for access to Web sites or electronic transactions. At a meeting on economic policies presided over by Finance Minister Han Duck-soo, officials decided to create a separate form of identification exclusively for online purposes. Currently, financial organizations such as banks and securities firms issue certificates of authorization, but many Web sites, such as online shopping malls, require users to enter their resident registration number when creating an account. Civic groups such as the Progressive Network Center have been requesting other means of identification, saying that excessive exposure of resident registration numbers led to identity theft by hackers. “After discussing with Internet-related companies and holding public hearings, we will try to introduce this new online authorization system during the second half of this year,” said Kang Jung-hyup of the Information Ministry. by Wohn Dong-hee
