Science advocates to unite

Some of the top academics in Korea, including stem cell researcher Hwang Woo-suk, are planning to form a science advocacy group later this year to advise the government on a wide range of issues, not just those related to science. Lee Byeong-gi, a Seoul National University electrical engineering professor, is the director of the group, A Citizens’ Union for a Better Scientific Society. He told reporters at the Korea Press Center yesterday that the association would distinguish itself from other advocacy groups by participating in the policymaking process not just on science issues, but on education, economy, culture and governance as well. “To overcome the structural problems of the economy and to set the strategy for our nation’s future, it’s time for professionals and academics in various fields to come forth,” he said. The advocacy group will have more than 200 members, including Kim Kwang-woong of Seoul National University’s Graduate School of Public Administration; Kim Tai-yoo of Seoul National University’s techno-economics and policy program; Min Kyung-chan, undergraduate dean of Yonsei University, and Yeom Jae-ho, a Korea University public administration professor. by Park Bang-ju
