DoCoMo’s partners to use LG phones

NTT DoCoMo Inc., the world’s second-largest mobile-phone company, said its eight global partners will buy LG Electronics Inc. handsets for use on their i-mode Web-browsing service, two weeks after agreeing to develop high-speed handsets with the South Korean manufacturer. LG Electronics, Korea’s second-largest electronics maker, will supply the L342i clam-shell handsets that come equipped with a camera and Java capability. Germany’s E-Plus Mobilfunk Gmbh, Taiwan’s Far EasTone Telecommunications Co. and six other carriers that provide i-mode services will buy the handsets, DoCoMo said in a press release. No financial details were disclosed. Mobile phone operators are looking at ways to cut costs as subscribers spend less time making voice calls, and handsets, with functions such as high-resolution cameras and music downloading capability, become more expensive. The i-mode service, which started in Japan in 1999, is the world’s first Web-accessing service for mobile phones developed by DoCoMo. The L342i handset is a second-generation model that uses the GSM/GPRS network common in Europe, Asia and the United States.
