Portal sites face probe on cyber violence

The Information Ministry said yesterday that it will investigate major Internet portal sites to examine how they are dealing with cyber violence. Until Tuesday, the ministry will examine regulations dealing with cyber violence on 15 portal sites, including Daum and Yahoo Korea. It will also ask the companies operating those sites to make it easier for Internet users to delete specific postings on Web boards that defame individuals online or over the telephone. It said it is carrying out these measures because it believes that large portal sites are not doing enough to tackle cyber violence. “In the case of some portal sites, individuals who have been defamed on the Internet can only request deletion of the posting by directly visiting the Web operator’s offices or sending a request by post,” a ministry official said. “Internet users have been complaining about these troublesome procedures.” Portal site operators, however, argue that they are doing their part in fighing cyber violence. The announcement came a day after a group representing victims of cyber violence held a press conference denouncing portal operators’ indifferent attitude toward offensive and insulting Web postings. by Lee Hee-sung, Wohn Dong-hee
