Spare parts drying up at older nuclear plants

A member of the National Assembly has criticized the administration for neglecting its oversight of Korea’s nuclear power plants. Byun Jae-ill of the governing Uri Party said that he had asked Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., a government-owned company, about its ability to maintain its nuclear plants that are more than 15 years old. According to Mr. Byun, the company replied that 91 components at these older plants cannot be replaced because the foreign manufacturers have stopped producing them. He did not suggest, however, that the safety of the plants was being compromised. He said the government has found alternative suppliers for 70 of the orphaned components, but has not yet found sources for the other 21.
