Poll finds Internet users favor real-name system

Three out of four Koreans participating in a survey think that the real-name system for online users will be effective in curbing cyberspace crimes, the Ministry of Information and Communication said yesterday. In a phone and Internet survey of 1,000 students, parents and teachers, 74.8 percent agreed with the government plan to adopt a system to require Internet users to provide their real names when posting online messages. Only 9.9 percent opposed it. The survey was conducted by Gallup Korea at the request of the Office for Government Policy Coordination. An Information Ministry official said the results reflect the majority of Korean Internet users’ positive outlook for the policy of using real names in cyberspace, adding momentum to the government’s objective to initiate the system later this year. Koreans share the view that online anonymity contributes to the current social malaise, the official added. Other surveys have shown similar results. In an Internet poll that Naver, Korea’s largest portal, has conducted since Sept. 12, 76 percent of 3,381 participants sided with the real-name system. Among those who approved, 39 percent said the real-name system should be applied to major portals and news sites, whereas 37 percent responded that the system should be applied to all Web sites. by Seo Ji-eun
