U.S. microchip firm opens R&D center

Agere Systems Inc., a U.S. microchip maker for mobile phones, said yesterday it has opened a research and development center here as the company strives to meet Korea’s increasing demand for mobile storage and wireless solutions. The announcement was made by Agere’s chief executive John Dickson at a press conference in Seoul. “We expect the research center in Seoul to help us introduce timely and innovative products for Korean clients,” Mr. Dickson said. The center employs some 20 engineers and will specialize in hard disk drives and solutions for portable electronics devices, the company’s Korean unit said.
