8-plant chip complex to rise near city

Samsung Electronics Co. announced yesterday plans to build eight new chip production plants, a research and development center and administrative center in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi province. The $33 billion project is the latest to win government approval despite Seoul’s attempts to force companies to build new plants outside the heavily industrialized Seoul and Gyeonggi province area. At 300 hectares (743 acres) in Hwaseong and Yongin counties, the plant would be the largest semiconductor chip complex in the world, the company said, adding that 14,000 new jobs would be created, including 5,000 new researcher positions. Ssangyong Motor has also won approval for a new Gyeonggi province plant. In addition, six additional companies ― four LG Group affiliates, Daeduck Electronics Co. and Dongyang Mechatronics ― waiting for approval of their proposed plants in the province. The government has said it would make exceptions to the policy for industrial projects that were “cornerstones for Korea’s industrial advancement.” An official at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy’s regional investment and industrial complex division refused to comment on whether or if the six other proposals would be approved. Samsung’s new research and development center, the company said, would be the headquarters of the manufacturing cluster. Its main job will be to develop higher capacity flash and conventional memory chips and develop processes that will shrink the size and power consumption of those chips. The 860-billion-won ($829 million) research center is scheduled to open in May. by Lee Hyun-sang, Yoo Jee-ho
