Nuclear waste ballot draws 60% turnout

Residents in four areas of Korea voted yesterday on how happy they would be with a nuclear waste dump in their backyards. Sixty percent of eligible voters in the four areas cast ballots, the National Election Commission said, although ballots were still being counted at press time last night. The local governments of the four areas ― Gyeongju, Pohang and Yeongdeok in North Gyeongsang province and Gunsan in North Jeolla province ― campaigned hard to increase support among residents, because the candidate site with the greatest majority of “yes” votes will get the nod and the largess that Seoul has promised to go along with the waste. Temporary storage sites at Korea’s 20 nuclear reactor sites will be filled by 2008, so the site search is a pressing issue.
