Panel levies fines on telecom firms
The Korea Communications Commission, an arm of the Information Ministry, said yesterday that it has imposed 2.8 billion won ($2.7 million) in surcharges on KT Corp. for involving non-sales employees in sales activities, which the government has banned. Also, the commission ordered KTF, the nation’s second-largest telecommunications operator, to pay a fine of 10 million won for account manipulation. In a separate case, SK, KTF and LG were ordered to pay fines of 520 million won, 140 million won and 90 million won, respectively, for including what the commission considered an excessively large number of unnecessary menu items on their mobile services in a bid to increase the time spent on the costly wireless mobile Internet service.
