LG Philips LCD reaches global sales landmark

LG Philips LCD Co., the world’s No. 2 maker of liquid crystal displays, has reached global sales of 10 million units of LCD panels for televisions larger than 15 inches, a figure unmatched by its rivals. LG Philips entered the LCD television screen market with 20.1-inch panels in 2000, selling 160 units that year. The company’s accumulated sales of LCD panels subsequently shot up, reaching 390,000 units in 2002, 1.5 million in 2003 and 4 million last year. The company has already sold 6 million such panels this year, taking its accumulated figure since 2000 past the 10 million mark. At a celebration at the company’s Gumi plant in North Gyeongsang province yesterday, LG Philips President Park Ki-seon said, “Surpassing the level of 10 million units is significant because we have successfully taken the upper hand in the LCD TV sector, which is considered a growth engine in the display market.” The company has held second place among global LCD television panel makers, behind Japan’s Sharp, ever since grabbing a 21 percent market share in 2002. Industry watchers now say it is highly likely that the company will rank top this year. According to market researcher Display Search, LG Philips accounted for 23 percent of the global LCD television panel market in the first three quarters of this year, maintaining a gap of just over 3 percentage points over second-placed ChiMei Optolectronics Corp. of Taiwan. Previous market leader Sharp currently ranks third, with a 19 percent share. In 2002, LG Philips opened the world’s first fifth-generation facility producing thin-film-transistor LCDs. And last year, the company established its sixth-generation production line, which churns out large-sized LCD panels for computer monitors and televisions. “When the seventh-generation facility in Paju, Gyeonggi province, begins operation in the first quarter of next year, we will become the first company in the world to operate both sixth- and seventh-generation facilities making panels sized between 32 inches and 47 inches,” said Mr. Park. by Seo Ji-eun
