SK, Pantech open factory in China

Two Korean firms yesterday launched a production plant in China as part of efforts to expand their market position in the world’s most populous country. The two are SK Telecom Co., Korea’s largest mobile phone network operator, and Pantech Co., the nation’s second largest handset maker. They held an opening ceremony for the plant in China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region with executives from both companies and Chinese government officials in attendance, the companies said. The handset plant will produce around 250,000 units this year, and aims to churn out 800,000 units annually. Last July, SK Telecom sold its mobile phone manufacturing business SK Teletech to Pantech.
