Ministry awards funding to 11 scientists
The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development announced yesterday the names of the 11 beneficiaries of its new Star Faculty program. It is the program’s first year. The winners will be awarded up to 2 billion won ($2 million) in research funds for up to 10 years. The program was designed to foster potential Nobel Prize laureates in scientific fields. The ministry selected 11 researchers in three major scientific fields ― physics, chemistry, and biology ― from a pool of applicants whose papers, listed on the Science Citation Index of journals, were cited by other journals or papers more than 1,000 times and who have over 10 years of experience as faculty members at universities or similar research facilities. The winners in the physics category were Kim Dai-sik, Rey Soo-Jong, and Kim Jihn-eui from Seoul National University, Lee Young-hee from Sungkyunkwan University and Chang Kee-joo at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. In chemistry, the winners were Kim Dong-ho from Yonsei University and Kim Seong-keun and Paik Myung-hyun, from Seoul National University. In biology, the winners were Koh Jae-young and Kwon Byoung-se from Ulsan University and Chung Chin-ha at Seoul National University. The winners receive at least 100 million won for theoretical research and 200 million won for experimental research every year for five years. by Kim Nam-joong
