8-fold rise is noted in cloned cell phones

The number of illegally cloned cellular phones discovered by Korean authorities has skyrocketed over the past year, the Communication Ministry said yesterday. The ministry said its Central Radio Management Office seized nearly 6,600 cloned phones last year, compared to about 860 in 2004. Cloners who know the serial numbers of phones issued to subscribers can enter those numbers into stolen or lost handsets and charge phone calls or mobile Internet services to the true subscriber. Some mobile Internet data services in particular carry high charges for access. Last March, the ministry adopted a fraud management system that includes a computer watching for cloned phones. Some bright but bent technicians have found ways to defeat the system, the ministry said.
