Prices of digital television sets drop

The price of digital television sets has been falling sharply since the start of the year, as electronics companies have been putting sales above profits, allowing even middle-class consumers to buy 40-inch plasma display panel (PDP) televisions or 37-inch liquid crystal display (LCD) sets for as low as 2 million won ($2,035). Samsung Electronics Co. said it has cut the price of its high-end 42-inch PDP television by 500,000 won to 4 million won. LG Electronics Inc. said it lowered the price of its 42-inch PDP television from 4.6 million won to 4.2 million won, and the price of its 50-inch PDP television was cut from nearly 7 million won to 6.3 million won. Daewoo Electronics Corp., which has been selling 42-inch digital television sets for nearly 3 million won since May last year, has lowered the price to slightly under 2.7 million won. Internet and specialist retailers are offering even lower prices for digital televisions. A 42-inch Samsung Electronics or LG Electronics PDP television, which normally costs 4 million won, now sells for 2.6 million won on some online shopping malls. Market experts say prices will continue to fall until May as manufacturers jostle for the top position in the market. “We expect the sales of PDP televisions to more than double over sales last year, as demand is rising ahead of the Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, which starts next month, and the World Cup in Germany, which kicks off in June,” said an employee at LG Electronics. Industry sources say the best time to buy a flat digital television in Korea will be either at the end of this month, after the nation celebrates the Lunar New Year, or between April and May, when companies ramp up their World Cup marketing drives. by Kim Chang-woo
