LG Telecom fined for ‘unfair’ tactics

Korea’s communications watchdog said yesterday it fined LG Telecom Inc. 2.2 billion won ($2.2 million) for unfair business practices. The Korea Communications Commission said the fine on the nation’s smallest mobile operator was imposed for subsidizing handset purchases last year during a customer-recruiting drive. Handset subsidies were banned in 2003 to cool down the market. The move came four months after the commission slapped a fine of 14.6 billion won on SK Telecom Co., the nation’s top mobile provider. “Despite several warnings about the payment of illegal subsidies, LG Telecom continued to commit unfair business practices,” the commission said.
