Landline phone firm will raise its prices

Hanarotelecom Inc., Korea’s second largest fixed-line phone service provider, said yesterday that it would raise its monthly service charges by 500 won (51 cents) in March. In a statement on its Web site, Hanarotelecom said calls made within the Seoul metropolitan area would be subject to the charge increase. The base charge for its fixed-line telephone service will rise to 4,500 won, the company said. “The decision was made to boost our profitability, which is lower than that of our market rival, KT Corp.,” a company spokesman said. The company’s income has plunged amid a slowdown in the fixed-line telecommunications market.
