Hynix rises a notch in flash chip market
Korea’s Hynix Semiconductor Inc. outperformed Renesas Technology Corp. of Japan last year to become the world’s third-largest producer of NAND flash memory chips, a market researcher said yesterday. According to the U.S.-based iSuppli Corp., Hynix Semiconductor sold $1.4 billion worth of NAND flash memory chips last year. They are used in digital cameras and MP3 players. Hynix’s sales more than quintupled during the year. It claimed nearly 13 percent of the global market in 2005. Another Korean company, Samsung Electronics Co., posted $5.7 billion in sales last year, retaining its leading status with a 53-percent market share, the researcher said.
