Unfair marketing by ISPs
Korea’s top communications regulator said yesterday that it will crack down on unfair business practices in the broadband Internet sector to prevent red-hot competition for subscribers from getting out of control. Market leader KT Corp. and other broadband Internet providers are said to be in cutthroat competition for new customers, often engaging in unfair marketing practices. The Korea Communications Commission has launched an industry-wide investigation into local Internet service providers. The investigation focuses on whether subsidies or discounts were given to lure customers from competitors. “We received a growing number of complaints about unfair marketing from customers since late last year,” a comission official said. The Internet companies under scrutiny include KT, Hanarotelecom Inc. and its subsidiary Powercomm Co. and cable operators that provide Internet services. As Powercomm and many cable operators have ramped up marketing, competition with major service providers has intensified, experts said.
