Daum unveils Internet-based telephony service in U.S.

Daum Communications Corp., Korea’s second-largest Internet portal, said yesterday it has launched an Internet-based telephony service in the United States. In a statement, Daum said it has begun offering Voice on Internet Protocol, or VoIP, through its U.S. subsidiary Lycos Inc., which it acquired in 2004 as part of efforts to make inroads into the U.S. market. VoIP is one of the fastest-emerging telephony services, which many experts forecast will replace fixed-line communications as the Internet becomes ubiquitous. Daum said Lycos is providing differentiated services in a U.S. market that has already been crowded with such high-profile players as eBay’s Skype, Time Warner’s America Online, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and EarthLink. To begin with, Lycos will focus on offering multimedia services such as telephony through messenger programs and others, including free-of-charge telephony for calling from PCs to land lines and PCs to mobile phones, Daum said. According to market researcher IDC, the world’s VoIP market is expected to grow nearly 50 percent annually to reach $40.9 billion by 2007. A separate report showed that the number of Internet telephony users in the United States will more than double to 7.5 million by 2007 from 2.5 million in 2002.
