LG Electronics, Samsung earn design awards

테스트

Two Korean electronics companies have been recognized by the red dot design competition ― one of the world’s largest. LG Electronics was selected as the finest design firm, the company said yesterday. Samsung’s products also received red dot product design awards. The annual red dot award competition is organized by the North-Rhine Westphalian Design Center, the oldest design institution in Europe. This year, LG Electronics’ corporate design team was elected the “red dot: design team of the year” for its high-quality and innovative design. It was the second time the highest prize was awarded to an Asian country since Sony took the title in 2000. Previous design teams in the “Hall of Fame” include those from Adidas, Nokia and Apple. Twenty of LG’s products including its T1 laptop series were selected as the “best of the best.” Peter Zec, initiator of the red dot design award and president of the international umbrella organization of design, Icsid, said, “LG has set trends with products such as the wall-mounted projector. Via technology and design, LG has made the step from pursuer to contender. All its activities and products focus on human needs in the digital age.” Samsung Electronics also received red dot design awards for 17 of its products, including four phones. Earlier this month at the iF Design Awards, Samsung won awards for 25 products including its 50-inch plasma display TV and 40-inch liquid crystal display TV. LG set an iF record for prizes won by one company in a year. The achievement, however, was not made overnight. Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee proclaimed 1996 as the company’s “year of design revolution.” Since 2003, the 350-person design team has been increased to number 560 as of last year. “There are research results that show that profits obtained from investing in a designer are five times higher than from investing in an engineer,” said Jeong Kook-hyun, the design strategic team head at Samsung. LG Electronics has taken a similarly aggressive stance on design. Vice chairman Kim Ssang-su has emphasized to employees that they must capture the eyes of customers in 0.6 of a second and that the company will nurture “super designers” and treat them like senior executives. by Wohn Dong-hee, Kim Chang-woo
