President of Samsung proud of deal with U.S.

NEW YORK ― Samsung Electronics president Lee Ki-tae said yesterday that for a U.S. telecommunication company to choose a technology developed entirely by a Korean company is significant for the telecommunication history of both nations. “No Japanese companies succeeded in entering the key U.S. telecommunication network markets,” Mr. Lee said. “Additionally, European companies such as Siemens and Alcatel succeeded only in entering some of the server areas.” The Samsung Electronics president said it was especially meaningful since 10 years ago Korea failed to enter the U.S. market with the first commercialized code division multiple access, or CDMA, system. “Comparing the WiBro system that Samsung Electronics has developed with other next generation telecommunication services, it is a year and a half ahead in standardizing the system and commercializing the technology,” Mr. Lee said. He said Samsung Electronics has made contact with Brazil, Venezuela, Croatia and Saudi Arabia to make trial runs with the wireless Internet services. He also said other telecommunication companies in countries such as Britain, France and Italy, are showing keen interest in the Korean technology. Samsung also will increase cooperation with Korean companies. by Nam Jeong-ho
