Korea to help train engineers overseas

Korea will dispatch science and technology instructors to seven developing countries in Asia to help train local engineers and students, the government said yesterday. The program is the first of its kind and calls for around 20 experts to be dispatched by the end of the year, the Ministry of Science and Technology said. “Qualified personnel in such areas as electronics, energy, biotechnology, computer science and architecture will be sent to Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Laos and Mongolia,” an official said. He added that the Korean experts will not only train people and offer consulting in the developing countries, but will also be asked to build important human networks. Such ties are expected to help Seoul strengthen its image as a technology leader in certain areas and to facilitate joint projects in the future. The program, to be managed by the state-run Korea Foundation for International Cooperation of Science and Technology, is expected to help Korean engineers gain valuable hands-on experience. The support team will be required to stay at least one year, with the government paying their salaries and other expenses. Qualified candidates are also required to be university graduates or higher with work experience in their fields of expertise.
