Motorola’s 4-year plan valued at $40 million

Global U.S. cell phone maker Motorola opened a research center yesterday in Seoul, marking the beginning of a four-year investment in research and development worth $38 billion won ($40.5 million). Motorola’s chief technology officer, Padmasree Warrior, and Korean Information Minister Rho Jun-hyong yesterday attended the launch of Motorola’s Things-to-Things Research Center in Yangjae, southern Seoul. The Motorola research center will start with 20 researchers and will take on joint R&D projects with local universities. The Motorola center is the third foreign IT research and development center to open in Korea this year. SAP, the fourth-largest software company in the world, opened one in January and Texas Instruments opened one for semiconductors in March. Motorola also announced a four-year joint research agreement to develop ubiquitous sensor network technology with the state-run Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute. Ubiquitous sensor network technology is a new communications network that supports wireless interactive service, such as building security management, environmental monitoring, and health examinations. The government is pursuing a project to create future cities that are connected by this network. by Wohn Dong-hee
