Clean-up in cyberspace will also raise awareness

The government is getting out its Internet vacuum cleaner, encouraging people to scrap dormant Web sites not being used. The Information Ministry said yesterday that it will conduct a three-week campaign with local Internet portal operators to “clean up” community sites, blogs, and private Web sites that have been “unused” for a long time. Depending on the service provider, the definition of “long” could be as short as three months. Thirteen portal service operators, such as Naver and Daum, are taking part in the campaign, being conducted with the Korea Information Security Agency. Users will receive a notice that their blog or community site is about to be taken down, which will lead to actual deletion if they do not respond; response is usually clicking the message or a visit to the Web site. “Blogs and community sites usually contain a lot of personal information, and these days hackers are abusing those Web sites to obtain information and to spread Internet viruses,” said Seo Seok-jin, an Information Ministry official. Portal providers have their own “cleaning” system, but th project was designed to raise public awareness that private information may be leaked through the Internet, and that people should consider what information they want posted in cyberspace. by Wohn Dong-hee
