Shinsegae Mart starts to open its chain stores

Shinsegae Mart, a subsidiary of Shinsegae that runs its stores under the E-Mart brand name, is starting operations today.
The chain will initially open three stores in Gyeonggi province and continue opening 13 more stores until March in Seoul, Incheon and other areas.
The stores were originally owned by Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, but were acquired by Shinsegae when the U.S. supermarket chain decided to withdraw from the domestic market.
The new stores will have E-Mart style displays.
Meanwhile, the No. 2 supermarket chain, Home Plus, is expected to be replaced by Lotte Mart when Lotte opens its 52nd store in Gwangju.
Home Plus operates 51 stores nationwide.
Lotte is expected to open more than 12 stores this year.
“We are planning to open 15 new stores. Lotte having the second place is temporary,” said an executive from Home Plus.
E-Mart has the lead in terms of both sales and store numbers.
