Kumho tire built for speed

A new tire from Kumho will come race ready.
Kumho Tire Co., a tire-making unit of Kumho-Asiana Group, said yesterday that it would begin sales of a new self-developed tire capable of performance at speeds up to 360 kilometers per hour (224 mph).
Kumho spent two years developing the X-speed tire which uses cutting-edge technology to minimize heat emissions.
Kumho joins Germany’s Continental AG, the sole provider of tires capable of performing at the maximum per-hour speed of 360 kilometers.
Available in two formats, for front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive vehicles, the tires will hit the market in Korea and other countries, said a spokesperson of Kumho, Korea’s second-largest tire producer.
X-speed tires are currently fitted on sports cars from Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
“The European tire industry projects that racing tires will account for up to 16 percent of the entire tire market by 2009,” the spokesman said.
Each X-tire will cost $200 and Kumho will unveil tires in six price categories.
