Court rules for LG, 2 others

A Seoul court yesterday ruled that LG Electronics Co. and two other Korean electronics companies did not violate a patent of Royal Philips of the Netherlands linked with the Dutch firm’s electronic image compression technology.
The Seoul Central District Court said that LG Electronics, Pantech and Pantech & Curitel Communications have employed a JPEG version that is “fundamentally different” from that of Philips.
The three Korean manufacturers of mobile handsets have counted on JPEG files to handle pictures in their products.
The court said it has not found any reason to believe there is a correlation between the two different versions of the image technology employed by the sides.
