Daegu ready for last lap of its 2011 bid inspection

Feb 21,2007
An inspection team from the International Association of Athletics Federations will begin a four-day visit to Daegu tomorrow, which is bidding to host the 2011 World Championships in Athletics, bid committee officials said.
Daegu, about 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, is competing against Moscow, Russia and Brisbane, Australia to host the biannual event. The IAAF will choose the host at its council meeting on March 27.
The eight-member IAAF commission will arrive in South Korea on Thursday after finishing an on-site inspection of Brisbane.
The commission, led by the vice chairman of the IAAF, Helmut Digel of Germany, will visit Daegu’s proposed venues, athletes’ village and convention center on Friday and will hold a press conference on Saturday.
The 11th World Championships will take place this year in Osaka, Japan, with the 12th scheduled for Berlin, Germany, in 2009. Daegu, Brisbane and Moscow are seeking to be the hosts in 2011 or 2013 while Barcelona is only interested in 2013.
If one of the three cities fails to win a majority of votes from the IAAF’s 28-member council, then the top two cities will enter a second round of votes to decide the winner.
