SK plans futuristic city in Mid East

SK Group said it signed a memorandum of understanding with the Saudi Arabian government to jointly build a futuristic city in the Middle Eastern country, to be controlled under a seamless Internet network connecting almost every urban facility.
“The joint project for the Ubiquitous City is hoped to serve as a turning point for the strategic partnership between the two countries as well as SK and Saudi Arabia,” said Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, who joined President Roh Moo-hyun on his trip to Middle Eastern countries including Qatar and Kuwait. Mr. Chey said the company would seek cooperation in plant construction, finance and information technology.
A “ubiquitous city” allows Internet network access for its inhabitants without restrictions on time or place with palm-sized terminals. For example, the city will enable senior citizens to receive remote medical checkups without visiting hospitals.
Many Korean cities, including Busan, Gwangju and Gimhae, South Gyeongsang province, plan to build a U-city in coming years. The Busan city government has set aside 1 trillion won ($1.1 billion) for the country’s first U-city, scheduled for completion around 2010. SK Group will set up a research committee with the Saudi government.
