American TV dramas steal Hallyu's thunder

There were around 500 women around the Shilla Hotel, central Seoul, screaming "Welcome Seokhopil! We love you," at 11 a.m. last Friday. The occasion was a fan meeting with Wentworth Miller, the actor who plays the lead character, Michael Scofield, in the American drama "Prison Break." Around 100 people who didn't have tickets stomped their feet waiting for a glimpse of the actor with placards in their hands.

지난 금요일 오전 11시 서울 신라호텔 주변은 “석호 환영해요! 당신을 사랑해요”라고 외치는 500여 명의 여성들로 북적였다. ‘미드(미국 드라마)’ 열풍의 주역, ‘프리즌 브레이크(탈옥)’의 주인공 웬트워스 밀러(35)의 팬 미팅 자리였다. 표를 구하지 못해 들어가지 못한 100여 명은 배우의 그림자라도 볼까 해 환영 문구가 새겨진 플래카드만 든 채 발을 동동 굴렀다.

Some among these adoring fans slept in the streets near the hotel. 'Seokhopil' is the Korean pronunciation of Scofield, Miller's character's name, which has become his nickname among Korean fans. Scenes like this show just how popular American dramas are becoming in Korea among twenty- to thirty-somethings.

이 중엔 목요일 밤부터 호텔 주변에서 노숙을 한 이도 있었다. ‘석호 ‘은 국내 팬들이 그에게 붙인 애칭으로, 극중 이름 ‘스코 드’를 한국식으로 변형한 것이다. 이 같은 장면은 한국에서 20~30대 사이에 불고 있는 ‘미드 바람’이 얼마나 거센지 잘 보여준다.

'Prison Break' is a popular drama that was launched in August 2005 on the Fox network. The story centers around Michael Scofield, the genius younger brother of Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell). Scofield attempts a bank robbery so he can get thrown in jail to help his brother, whom he thinks was wrongly convicted of murdering the vice president's brother.

‘프리즌 브레이크’는 미국 폭스TV에서 2005년 8월부터 방송 중인 인기 드라마다. 이야기는 형 링컨 버로우스(도미니크 퍼셀 역)의 천재 동생(마이클 스코 드)에 집중된다. 스코 드는 미국 부통령의 동생을 살해했다는 누명을 쓴 형을 돕기 위해 은행 강도를 시도하다 감옥에 갇힌다.

Word of the well-crafted plot and charming lead actor started spreading through the Internet, successfully making the series one of the most watched American dramas in Korea. There are over 60 Internet fan cafes with around 200,000 members devoted to the drama and its characters. These numbers are almost on par with the fan base for local celebrities.

잘 만들어진 줄거리와 매력적인 주인공에 관한 입소문이 인터넷을 통해 번지며, 그 드라마를 한국에서 가장 많이 보는 미국 드라마의 하나로 만들었다. 관련 팬 카페 수는 무려 60여 개로 회원 수만 20만 명에 이른다. 웬만한 국내 스타 못지 은 인기다.

Won Jong-woon, an executive at Cheil Industries who scouted Miller to appear in their television advertisement for Bean Pole (a clothing brand) said, "We have used superstars such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Daniel Henney but decided to hire Miller because he has had such a big impact on the Korean audience."

그를 빈폴 진 CF 모델로 낙점한 제일모직의 원종운 전무는 “그동안 귀네스 팰트로, 다니엘 헤니 등 톱스타가 맡아 왔던 빈폴 모델에 밀러를 추가 기용한 것은 충분한 영향력이 있다고 판단했기 때문”이라고 말했다.
