Chairman Kim faces the police in assault scandal

Giving in to the inevitable, Hanwha Group Chairman Kim Seung-youn stopped making excuses and showed up yesterday at the
Namdaemun police precinct for questioning in the case involving his bodyguards taking revenge after his son was mixed up in a drunken brawl in a Seoul night club.

Under political and public pressure to question Kim, police had threatened to issue an arrest warrant if he did not appear over the weekend. At approximately 3:55 p.m., a grim-faced Kim, dressed in a black suit and a blue tie, stepped out of his Mercedes Benz. For a few seconds, he stared ahead before the crush of cameras and reporters closed in on the troubled tycoon.

김 회장을 조사하라는 정치권과 국민여론의 압력을 받은 경찰은 주말에 김회장이 출두하지 않으면 체포영장을 발부받을 것이라고 위협했었다. 오후 3시55분쯤 검은색 양복에 푸른 넥타이를 매고 불쾌한 표정을 지은 김회장이 벤츠 승용차에서 내렸다. 몇초 동안 그는 곤경에 처한 재계 거물을 취재하기 위해 몰려든 카메라와 취재기자들을 응시했다.
“I am very sorry I made trouble out of personal matters,” he said. To questions about whether he himself had swung at one of the young men assaulted by the bodyguards, he answered, “The police investigation will find that out.” Asked about published reports that he had dragged the men to the woods for a beating, he said he had not heard of the incident.
그는 “개인문제로 물의 일으켜 대단히 죄송하다”고 말했다. 경호원들에게 폭행당한 젊은 남자들 가운데 한명을 자신이 직접 폭행했는지를 묻는 질문에 그는 “경찰조사에서 밝혀질 것이다”고 말했다. 폭행하기 위해 그 남자들을 숲으로 끌고 갔다는 보도에 대해 묻자, 그는 그런 일을 들어보지 못했다고 대답했다.
If Kim, 55, is charged with going to the bar in northern Seoul on March 9 with his bodyguards and ordering them to assault a group of young men who got into a fight with his drunken son, Kim could face a prison term of up to seven years or up to 10 million won ($11,000) fine.

만약 김회장이 3월9일 자신의 경호원들을 데리고 서울 북부의 술집에 가서 김회장의 술취한 아들과 싸운 젊은 남자들을 폭행하라고 경호원들에게 명령한 혐의로 기소되면, 김회장은 7년 이하의 징역이나 1천만원 이하의 벌금을 선고받을 수 있다.
But if the chairman himself swung at the young men, as victims’ testimonies have said so far, the prison term can extend to ten-and-a-half years with an extra 5 million won in fines. Investigators also wanted to know whether he and his men were holding weapons, including pistols, which is tightly controlled in Korea.

그러나 만약 피해자들의 진술처럼 김회장 자신이 직접 폭력을 휘둘렀다면, 징역은 10년6개월까지 늘어날 수 있고 벌금은 5백만원이 추가될 수 있다. 경찰은 김회장과 경호원들이 한국에서 엄격히 통제되고 있는 권총을 포함한 흉기들을 소지했는지를 수사할 방침이다.
So far, Kim has denied the allegations, while the case has captured the local imagination and even led the Blue House to call for a thorough investigation. The testimony from the victims and Kim are so far very inconsistent. The police will have to put the puzzle together through questioning all sides, but the victims are reportedly refusing to come forward publicly because they fear retaliation from Kim.

지금까지 김회장은 혐의들을 모두 부인했다. 그러나 이 사건은 세간의 이목을 사로잡았고 심지어는 청와대까지 나서서 철저한 수사를 요구했다. 피해자들과 김회장의 진술이 지금까지는 너무 일치하지 않았다. 경찰은 모든 관련자들을 수사해서 이 퍼즐을 풀어야 한다. 그러나 피해자들이 김회장측의 보복을 두려워해서 공개적으로 나서는 것을 거부하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.
