Embracing change, Kim wins, then helps victims

Kim Mi-hyun, known as the ｡ｮsuper peanut｡ｯ, of the U.S. Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour said last winter that it wouldn｡ｯt be until May that changes to her swing would bear fruit. Well, May is here, and Kim has harvested some early fruit at May｡ｯs first LPGA tournament.

미국 LPGA 투어에 참여하고 있는 슈퍼 땅콩 김미현은 지난 겨울, 5월 이전에는 스윙의 변화가 결실을 맺지 못할 것이라고 말했다. 5월이 되자 김미현은 5월의 첫째 LPGA 토 먼트에서 조생종 과실을 거뒀다.

Kim captured the $1.4 million SemGroup Championship on Sunday at Cedar Ridge Country Club in Broken Arrow, Okla., the first LPGA victory by a Korean in 2007. Kim defeated American Hall of Famer Juli Inkster in a sudden-death playoff. Both closed regulation at the three-round total of 3-under par. Korea｡ｯs Kim Young finished in a tie for fifth place.

김미현은 지난 일요일 오클라호마주 브로큰 애로우의 체다 리즈 컨트리 클럽에서 벌어진 총 상금 1백40만달러의 셈그룹 챔피언쉽에서 우승했다. 2007년 LPGA 경기서 한국인이 처음으로 승리한 것이다. 김미현은 연장 서든 데스까지 가는 접전 끝에 명예의 전당에 오른 미국의 줄리 잉크스터를 물리쳤다.

마지막 날 18번 홀에서 공을 벙커에 빠뜨린 김미현은 짧은 파 퍼트를 실패했다. 만약 파에 성공했다면 그 홀에서 먼저 버디를 기록한 잉크스터를 누르고 바로 우승을 했을 것이다.

｡ｰAfter the bunker shot [at the 18th hole], I was so nervous that my hands were shaking,｡ｱ Kim said. ｡ｰWhen I set up the putt, I knew the line, but I couldn｡ｯt stroke the putt.｡ｱ

김미현은 “[18번 홀에서] 벙크 샷을 한 이후 나는 무 긴장해서 손이 떨렸다”며 “퍼팅 자세를 했을 때 퍼팅 라인을 읽었지만 퍼팅을 할 수 없었다”고 말했다.

But when the two played the 18th again in the playoff, Kim was better, sinking a 4-foot putt for par after Inkster bogeyed. Kim later admitted she wasn｡ｯt as nervous in the playoff as she had been in regulation.

그러나 두 선수가 연장전 18번 홀에서 맞붙었을 때 김미현은 4피트 짜리 퍼트를 성공시켜, 보기에 그친 잉크스터를 물리쳤다. 김미현은 경기 후 정규 경기에서처럼 연장전에서는 떨지 았다고 밝혔다.
It was Kim｡ｯs eighth career LPGA win, her first since last August, and her second playoff victory. Kim｡ｯs last tour win came in 2006 after a three-hole playoff with Natalie Gulbis in the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic.

이번 우승으로 김미현은 8번째 LPGA 승리를 차지했다. 지난 8월 이후로는 첫 번째 승리며, 연장전 승리로는 두 번째다. 김미현의 지난 투어 우승은 2006년 제이미 파 오웬스 코닝 클래식에서 나탈리 걸비스 와의 3개 홀 연장전에서의 승리였다.

Kim began the final round one shot behind four leaders tied at 4-under. But an even-par round of 71 was good enough in windy conditions, as the inexperienced co-leaders, Nicole Castrale, Stephanie Louden, Reilley Rankin and Karin Sjodin ｡ｪ all seeking their first LPGA win ｡ｪ fell off the pace.

김미현은 마지막 라운드에서 포 언더를 기록한 4명의 공동 선두에 1타 차로 뒤져 있었다. 그러나 경험이 부족한 공동 선두 니콜 카스트레일과 스테파니 라우든, 라일리 랭킨, 카린 쇠딘 등 ｡ｪ 첫 LPGA 우승을 노리던 ｡ｪ 이 우승권에서 멀어진 틈을 타, 김미현은 71타로 이븐 파로 마쳐 바람이 심하게 부는 조건에서 훌륭하게 경기를 마쳤다.

｡ｰMy goal was just a top 10, or top 20 finish this week,｡ｱ Kim said. ｡ｰI never thought about a win this week.

“나의 목표는 이번 주 상위 10위권, 또는 20위 권에 드는 것이었다”는 김미현은 “이번 주에 우승하리라고는 생각지 못 했다”고 말했다.
