A basic tapas set at Pash. By Cho Jae-eun

For any fashion fanatic, walking past a Chanel or Hermes store is a heart-thumping experience, especially when the new season bags are on display beneath serene, luminous lighting. I don’t believe in love-at-first-sight but I strongly believe in loving a beautifully sculpted piece of alligator skin at first sight.
This past weekend, instead of walking past the six-story Maison Hermes at Dosan Park as I normally would, I decided to enter, feeling quite confident with a new outfit on. However, after gazing at a row of T-shirts that would cost me half a month’s salary, I found myself heading toward the door.
A bit sad from my 10-minute realization that I wasn’t Gwyneth Paltrow, I looked across the street to notice a chic, ivory-colored deli/restaurant with tall glass windows. I went in and ordered a tapas set (with pickled olives and bread including sheet crackers, baguette and funnel taralli) to eat there as well as a BLT sandwich, mini baguette and sheet crackers to go.
The two-story restaurant Pash opened earlier this year. It specializes in bread and contemporary Spanish cuisine with a touch of fusion elements ― for example, paella with corvine. The first floor includes a spacious cafe with a display of cakes, cookies, sandwiches and a small ice cream booth. The tapas rated an 8 out of 10, with freshly pickled, high-quality olives and a nice selection of breads. The baguette was very good, with a sturdy crust that was not too thick, doughy crumbs and a pleasant aroma. However, concerning the price and quality, I rate the Paris Croissant’s baguettes at Seorae Village (an area with a high density of French residents) higher.
The BLT was a downer ― mayonnaise-central, with the mustard-mayonnaise covering the rest of the ingredients. The best part of my experience at Pash was the impressive black tea ice cream.
As I headed toward the nearby Cine City theater to meet friends with the ice cream cup in hand, I decided that being able to eat carbs and being anonymous was good enough for now.
After all, isn’t it the dream of an Hermes bag, rather than the actual bag, that is more intriguing?

Pash is located near Dosan Park in Sinsa-dong, southern Seoul and is open from 11 to 1 a.m. (except Sundays). For more information, call (02) 541-7274.
