GNP question raises still more questions

A simple question in a public opinion survey asking voters to state their preferred candidate for president caused an angry uproar from the Park Geun-hye campaign yesterday.

유권자들에게 자신들이 선호하는 대통령 후보를 묻는 단순한 여론조사 질문방식에 박근혜 후보 선거운동 캠프가 어제 발끈 화를 냈다.

"Who do you think makes the best GNP presidential candidate?" reads the question, followed by a list of the GNP hopefuls in the party's Aug. 19 primary. The question will appear on an opinion survey that will help determine the winner of the GNP primary.

"당신은 한나라당 대통령 후보로 누가 가장 좋다고 생각하십니까?"라는 질문과 함께 8월19일 경선에 출마한 후보들의 명단이 제시된다. 한나라당 경선 승자를 가리는데 활용될 여론조사에 이 질문이 사용될 것이다.

"This sentence was a compromise," explained Choi Ku-sik, the spokesman of the party's primary election commission. He said the party tried to integrate two different approaches into one. The party delayed the question announcement for some time due to the fierce political battle underway between the front-runners, Park and Lee Myung-bak.

한나라당 경선관리위원회 최구식 대변인은 "이 문장은 절충안이다."고 설명했다. 그는 당은 두 가지 질문방식을 하나로 통합하려고 했다고 말했다. 대선 선두주자인 박근혜와 이명박 사이의 치열한 정쟁 때문에 한 동안 여론조사 질문방식의 발표를 미뤄왔었다.

Yesterday's momentous question decision did nothing to lower the heat. Park's campaign said the question favors Lee, and she had already threatened last week to boycott the primary if the question was not revised.

어제 질문방식에 대해 중대한 결정이 내려졌음에도 불구하고 정쟁은 사그라지지 않았다. 박근혜 캠프는 그 질문이 이명박 후보에게 유리하다고 주장했다. 박 후보는 이미 지난주에 질문방식이 고쳐지지 않으면 경선에 참여하지 않겠다고 위협했었다.

Although Park did not repeat her boycott threat, her campaign released a statement saying the party's question is unacceptable. "This is not a matter that can be negotiated," the statement said.

비록 박근혜 후보가 경선불참 위협을 다시 꺼내지는 않았지만, 박 후보 캠프는 그 질문방식을 받아들일 수 없다는 성명을 발표했다. 성명에서 "이것은 타협의 대상이 아니다"고 주장했다.

According to Park's supporters, the practice of other countries suggests that the question should simply ask, "Who would you vote for?" Asking who's "best" tilts the poll towards Lee, Park's group says.
박 후보 지지자들은 다른 국가들의 사례를 보더라도 간단히 "누구에게 투표할 것인가"라고 질문하면 된다고 주장한다. “누가 가장 좋으냐”라는 질문방식은 이명박 후보에게 유리하도록 여론을 조장하는 것이라고 박 후보측은 주장한다.

Lee had suggested that the poll ask, "Who do you prefer as the next presidential candidate?" Lee's camp said that asking for the voters' personal preference is a better way to know accurately who the voter supports.

이명박 후보는 "당신은 대통령 후보로 누구를 선호하느냐"라는 질문방식을 제안했었다. 이 후보 캠프는 유권자의 선호도를 묻는 방식이 유권자가 누구를 지지하는지를 정확하게 알 수 있는 더 나은 방식이라고 주장했다.

The poll, which is one of four weighted factors in the primary, has been a point of contention since the race began. The candidates believe that the wrong question could cost them the primary. Other factors include direct votes by party members and the general public.

경선에 반영되는 네 가지 투표방식 가운데 하나인 여론조사는 경선이 시작된 이래로 계속 분쟁의 대상이었다. 후보들은 불리한 질문방식 때문에 경선에서 질 수도 있다고 생각하고 있다. 다른 투표방식들은 당원들과 일반국민들에 의한 직접투표이다.

Experts say that questions can affect poll results, widening the gap by up to two percentage points. In this case, each percentage point equates to approximately 300 votes.

Meanwhile, the vigorous battle between Park and Lee continued yesterday during a joint GNP-sponsored rally in Changwon, South Gyeongsang.
