The long wait for a sign of hope in the hostage crisis in Afghanistan ended late yesterday with the release of two female hostages from among the 21 Christian aid workers being held by the Taliban since last month's kidnapping.

"I am okay. We are two, we are O.K.," said one of the hostages who called AFP to say that they had been released and were being driven to a rendezvous with Red Cross officials.
The women were identified by the Foreign Ministry as Kim Kyung-ja and Kim Gina.

"It is fortunate that my sister is released, but I hope all the hostages are released safely soon," said Kim Gi-woong, the older brother of Kim Gina, at a press conference.

"They can walk and they are in relatively healthy condition," said a senior government official speaking on background. The official said that the two women entered an area controlled by U.S.-led allied forces in Ghazni and are expected to undergo medical check-ups there. They will be handed over to South Korean forces for further rest before returning home.
*medical check-up: 건강검진

The official said that the Taliban had released the hostages without any preconditions. No time has been set for their return to Seoul. The official said that the remaining hostages seemed to be in relatively good condition based upon various contacts with the kidnappers.

The Blue House also issued a statement welcoming the release. "The South Korean government is pleased, along with the entire Korean people, at the release of two of the Korean captives," it said. "But the government still regrets the protracted captivity of the remaining 19 hostages."

The two women were in tears as they got out of a dark gray Toyota Corolla driven by an Afghan elder and into two waiting vehicles from the International Committee for the Red Cross after their release, The Associated Press reported. They did not speak to reporters when they were let out at a prearranged meeting point.

The releases had been expected since the weekend when Taliban negotiators said they were letting the women go as a "goodwill gesture" during talks with Korean government officials. The Taliban said the women were ill.
*good will gesture: 호의 표시

The waiting game and releases came as Korean officials and Taliban representatives were engaged in a fourth day of face-to-face talks in Ghazni City on the fate of the hostages. The insurgents have demanded that Taliban prisoners be released in exchange for hostages, but that demand has been rebuffed by both Kabul and Washington.
