One theory is that the croissant was invented in Vienna. In the 1680s, Vienna, the capital city of Austria, ⓐor then the Habsburg dynasty, had been besieged ⓑby the Ottoman Empire army of 140,000 men for two months. Citizens of Vienna ⓒwho were desperate because supplies ⓓwere stopped due to the siege were said to ⓔhave made a crescent-shaped bread and ate it to reinforce their determination ⓕto win the battle. Another theory is that the king of Poland who ⓖhelped tremendously to defeat the Turkish army in the Battle of Vienna ⓗsuggested to make ⓘa crescent-shaped bread ⓙin order to chew the symbol of the enemy. And as Marie Antoinette, the Princess of Austria, ⓚmarried to Louise XVI, then ⓛPrince of France, ⓜcroissant also crossed the French border.
