GNP raises the heat on information chief

With relations between journalists and President Roh Moo-hyun's administration at a low ebb over the government's new media policy, the Grand National Party sent a resolution to the National Assembly yesterday to dismiss the head of the government's public relations office.

정부의 새 언론정책을 놓고 노무현 정부와 기자들의 관계가 악화되고 있는 가운데, 한나라당이 어제 국정홍보처장을 해임하는 결의안을 국회에 제출했다.
Taking aim at Kim Chang-ho, the head of the Government Information Agency, the GNP demanded his sacking. "Without a doubt there are serious flaws in his ability to carry out his duties," the party said, criticizing "the consolidation of press rooms at a cost of 5.5 billion won [$5.8 million] in tax money and a serious threat to press freedom."

한나라당은 김창호 국정홍보처장을 겨냥해서 그의 해임을 요구했다. 한나라당은 "55억의 세금을 사용해서 기자실을 통폐합하면서 언론자유를 심각하게 위협하고 있다"고 비난하면서 "직무수행 능력에 심각한 문제들이 있다"고 말했다.
"The administration must be checked by the people, but the policy that bars journalists from accessing the government makes it a sanctuary away from public view," the resolution concluded.

각 정부부처에 따로 있는 37개의 기자실들을 3개의 브리핑실로 통합하는 새 언론정책은 그 변화를 달가워하지 않는 언론사들의 분노의 표적이었다. 또한 그 정책을 비판하는 보수와 진보진영의 정치인들에게는 정치 쟁점이 되었다.
The administration is unfazed. Since mid-July, construction has been underway on the briefing centers with the goal of shutting down all the old press rooms by the end of this month. Lawmakers, journalists and even an independent presidential commission repeated their objections to the policy yesterday.

정부는 요지부동이다. 이달 말까지 옛 기자실들을 모두 폐쇄하는 것을 목표로 6월 중순부터 통합브리핑실을 설치하는 공사가 진행되고 있다. 국회의원들과 기자들, 심지어는 대통령 산하 특별위원회까지 새 언론정책에 반대하는 의견을 어제 다시 표명했다.
GNP presidential candidate Lee Myung-bak repeated a vow yesterday to throw out the media policy. "I will reverse the whole thing if I win," Lee said. The newly formed United New Democratic Party, composed of pro-government politicians, also slammed the policy.

이명박 한나라당 대통령 후보는 어제 그 언론정책을 폐기하겠다는 공약을 다시 확인했다. 이 후보는 "내가 대통령이 된다면 그 전부를 되돌려 놓겠다."고 말했다. 친정부 정치인들로 구성된 통합민주신당도 그 정책을 세차게 비난했다.
"It is wrong for the government to push forward the media policy over the unanimous objections of the media community," said Representative Lee Nak-yon, the spokesman for the party. "The administration said it came up with the policy to assist journalists, but reporters regard it as a measure to control the press."

통합민주신당 이낙연 대변인은"언론계가 모두 반대하는데도 새 언론정책을 강행하는 것은 잘못이다."고 말했다. "정부는 기자들을 지원하려고 그 정책을 추진한다고 했지만, 기자들은 정부가 그 정책으로 언론을 통제하려 한다고 생각하고 있다."
