Handshakes, ceremony and hope

In a gesture filled with drama and hope for a peaceful future, President Roh Moo-hyun and First Lady Kwon Yang-suk left their car yesterday to cross on foot from one of the world's most successful capitalist countries into one of the last communist strongholds.

평화에 대한 염원을 가득 담은 극적 연출로 노무현 대통령과 영부인 권영숙 여사는 차에서 내려 세계에서 가장 성공한 자본주의 국가 중 하나에서 마지막 남은 공산주의 거점의 하나로 어제 걸어서 넘어갔다.

In becoming the first South Korean president to walk across the world's most heavily guarded border, Roh fulfilled his dream of holding an inter-Korea summit with the North's Kim Jong-il, who greeted him personally at the April 25 Culture Hall, the biggest performing arts center in Pyongyang.
세계에서 가장 중무장한 군사들이 지키는 국경을 걸어서 넘어간 첫 번째 남한 대통령이 되면서 노 대통령은 북한 김정일 국방위원장과 정상회담을 갖겠다는 그의 꿈을 실현했다. 김 위원장은 평양에서 가장 큰 예술공연장인 4.25 문화회관에서 직접 노 대통령을 영접했다.

Kim's gesture at the start of the three-day visit echoed the first inter-Korean summit in 2000 when he greeted then-President Kim Dae-jung on the tarmac at Sunan airport. It was a day that was long on ceremony and short on substance. The formal talks begin today. No agenda has been released for the discussions between the two leaders, although Roh has said he hopes to take steps toward a peace agreement on the peninsula.

3일간의 방문 첫날에 김 위원장이 직접 노 대통령을 영접한 것은 순안공항 활주로에서 김대중 대통령을 맞이한 2000년 첫 번째 남북 정상회담의 상황과 비슷하다. 의전은 장황했으나 실질적인 진전은 별로 없었던 하루였다. 공식 회담은 오늘 시작된다. 비록 노 대통령이 한반도 평화협정을 이끌어내는 방도를 간구하겠다고 밝혔지만, 두 정상이 어떤 의제는 논의할 지는 사전에 발표되지 않았다.

Nearing the end of his term in office and obviously savoring the spotlight, Roh beamed as he walked toward the reclusive Kim, who stood still in his trademark military-style khaki suit. Kim did not offer the warm smile that he gave to Roh's predecessor seven years ago. Instead, there was a simple handshake.

임기가 끝나가지만 분명히 세상의 주목을 받고 있는 노 대통령은 은둔의 지도자 김 위원장에게 걸어가면서 환하게 웃었다. 트레이트마크인 군복모양의 카키색 옷을 입은 김 위원장은 가만히 서서 기다렸다. 김 위원장은 7년 전에 노 대통령의 전임자에게 보여줬던 환한 미소를 짓지 않았다. 대신, 간단히 악수만 했다.

But Roh's walk across the Military Demarcation Line separating the South from the North two hours earlier was a moment of drama for two long-estranged halves of the same civilization, one poor and one now among the wealthiest countries on earth.

그러나 두 시간 전 노 대통령이 남북을 가르는 군사분계선을 걸어서 넘은 순간은 분단돼 오랫동안 소원해진 남북에게 극적이었다. 남북한은 같은 문명이면서도 한쪽은 가난하고 다른 한쪽은 세계에서 가장 잘 사는 나라 가운데 하나다.

"I am very excited today because I am going into North Korea on an important mission," Roh said before crossing the thick, bright yellow stripe painted on the black asphalt for this occasion.
"This forbidden line will gradually fade out," he said of the demarcation line. "The barrier between the South and North will eventually crumble one day."

“저는 중요한 임무로 수행하려고 북한에 들어가기 때문에 오늘 매우 흥분됩니다.” 노 대통령은 이 순간을 위해 검은 아스팔트 위에 두껍고 밝은 노란색으로 칠해진 선을 넘기 전에 말했다. 군사분계선을 지칭하며, 노 대통령은“이 금단의 선은 점차 사라질 것입니다. 남북한 사이의 장벽은 언젠가는 무너질 것입니다.”고 말했다.
